The sun shone on South Side's 22nd Street, Saturday, September 15th, encouraging 400 neighbors and friends to enjoy live music, delicious food and each other.
The sixth annual South Side Neighborhood Street Party, hosted by South Side Community Council and Ormsby Recreation Center, welcomed children with face painting, balloon artistry, a bounce house, jugglers and games. Lee Robinson & ISKA entertained with jazz and Strange Brew, augmented by local residents, John Colby and Bev Rohlehr, followed with blues and rock and roll. Gene Ricciardi and Jim Krenn served as Masters of Ceremonies.
Some neighbors and 30 restaurants contributed a wide assortment of food. Rothrock Academy offered a Tai Chi class and staged a dynamic Lion Dance for the crowd. Baron Batch created a colorful welcome poster for party attendees to their names and comments. Steven Gailey added his juggling skills to the day. Over 60 students from Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh proved to be invaluable volunteers as they helped with set up, tear down and everything in between.
Rebecca Miller, of Shake the Tree, set up a South Side History Corner so home owners could check on the history of their houses or explore their family tree. It was a popular stop for party guests.
The city's mounted police were on hand with three four-legged beauties which delighted children and adults alike. Another officer participated in a spontaneous football game in the adjoining field.
The party's sponsors include: City Vets, which sponsored both bands, John J. Gmiter Funeral Home, Representative Harry Readshaw, Frank Vitale, Councilman Bruce A.
