Goodwill is offering adult education classes

February 6, 2018

Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania offers many opportunities for people who wish to improve their education on their way to improving their employment future.

The agency is now enrolling for free adult education classes at locations in downtown Pittsburgh, Lawrenceville, McKees Rocks, McKeesport, North Side, South Side, PA CareerLink® Allegheny East Forest Hills.

In 2017, Goodwill started preparing students for the HiSET® exam in addition to the GED® test. The HiSET® exam became recognized in the state of Pennsylvania as another option for a high school credential in 2016. New to 2018, Goodwill is now offering college prep to those students who have a high school credential and are transitioning to college and need assistance in taking that next step.

“Our college prep class is for ANYONE who needs extra help preparing to enter post – secondary. We offer college visits, brush up in reading and math skills, and assistance with finding financial aid. This class is really for those who aren’t sure about the college experience,” said Danielle Blanchard-Krane, literacy coordinator at Goodwill SWPA. “We also have classes to improve your English for those working toward US citizenship. If you made a New Year’s resolution to expand your education, it’s not too late to register for classes at Goodwill.”

Classes incorporate reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and analysis -- the core skills needed to pass the GED® test. Students can choose from several convenient class times during the day, Monday through Thursday. Evening classes are also available at Goodwill’s Workforce Development Center (WDC) in Lawrenceville, as well as the South Side location.

Goodwill’s ESL/EL Civics classes help non-native English speakers to improve their speaking, listening, reading, writing and citizenship skills. ESL/EL Civics classes are held at the Lawrenceville WDC and community locations.

Goodwill also offers HiSET® and GED® testing at the Lawrenceville WDC testing center, with varying times, Monday through Saturday. All candidates for the HiSET® or GED® test can take the complete battery of tests at the Goodwill Testing Center regardless of whether they have taken the preparation classes through Goodwill.

Testing can be scheduled at http://www.HiSet.com or http://www.GED.com.
