A+ Schools names new board members and advocacy agenda

A+ Schools announced the appointment of nine new board members to its board of directors effective immediately.

“These new board members bring a wealth of knowledge and energy to the organization. Also, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing board members – several of whom committed themselves beyond their initial term periods. Their leadership has contributed A+ Schools’ position as a leading advocate for equity and excellence in our public schools,” said Tracey Reed Armant, chair, A+ Schools board of directors.

The new board members are:

Keely Baronak, associate professor and chair of the education department, Carlow University;

Jason Boll, a teacher with Pittsburgh Public Schools;

Tiffany Jimenez, director of development, Wesley Family Services;

Valerie Kinloch, dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Education;

Braveen Ragunathan, pediatric resident, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC;

Kudzai Sihlangu, senior investment product specialist, Federated Investors;

Sarah Silverman, senior vice president, Whiteboard Advisors;

Sarah Siplak, director, Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative; and,

Richard Victoria, partner, Gordon & Rees, LLP.

With the appointment of the new members, A+ Schools’ board of directors consists of 19 members.

A+ Schools also released its advocacy agenda for 2018, in which the new board members will take an active role in carrying out. The organization will focus its programming, including parent and student engagement, and its research agenda on three main topic areas: widespread knowledge of and access to gifted programming, increased awareness and implementation of restorative practices, and championing our students in their efforts to build knowledge around effective teaching and inclusive learning environments.

“This is an exciting time for A+ Schools,” said James Fogarty, the organization’s executive director. “I’m ready to get to work with our board to improve access to opportunities for all children and to ensure that every Pittsburgher is invested in the quality of all of Pittsburgh’s public schools.”
