Rivers of Steel is seeking visual and performing artists for Alloy Pittsburgh
January 16, 2018
Rivers of Steel seeks visual and performing artists to apply for Alloy Pittsburgh, a biennial exhibition that examines the history, current condition and possible future of the Carrie Blast Furnaces, while offering regional artists a unique exhibition opportunity and career-building experience. Deadline for entry is February 11.
“Alloy Pittsburgh is something truly unique to Pittsburgh where artists have the chance to situate their creative practice squarely within the context of this region’s past, present and future,” said Chris McGinnis, director of Rivers of Steel Arts. “For artists and viewers alike, Alloy captures that sense of wonder and discovery found in the majestic Carrie Furnaces, sometimes playfully or critically, but always authentically.”
Alloy Pittsburgh 2018 is open to regional artists and collaborative groups. Artists must live in one of the following PA counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington or Westmoreland. All works must be conceived specifically for the Carrie Furnaces site and must exist in some form throughout the duration of the exhibition.
A jury of arts professionals and project advisors will review all proposals and select artists for participation. Selected project proposals will receive a $1000 stipend for the creation of the project. Interested artists can view the submission guidelines at: http://bit.ly/2FsqC6M.
Artists should apply before the February 11 deadline; selected artists will be notified March 1. A research residency occurs in May. The exhibition runs from August 25 through September 30.
Rivers of Steel is partnering with five local institutions for Alloy Pittsburgh 2018, including Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Center for African American Poetry and Poetics, Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Kipp Gallery, Pittsburgh Glass Center and Radiant Hall Studios. Each partnering institution will select an artist to be included. Rivers of Steel will select four additional artists, for a total of nine.
The 2018 installation will mark the third occurrence of the exhibition.
