Port Authority fare enforcement policy to start this summer
As part of an overall effort to maximize farebox collections and provide additional security on transit vehicles, Port Authority police officers will soon begin enforcing proof of payment on rail vehicles and inside rail stations.
Fare enforcement is being focused on the light rail system because of the Port Authority Board-approved switch to a cashless proof-of-payment system. This means that passengers will be required to show proof that they have paid their fare.
Fare compliance checks will begin this summer. The authority soon will announce a specific date and provide customers with more information - including materials at stations and on rail vehicles - about the change.
“Ensuring that riders pay their fare is essential to the fare policy,” said Port Authority CEO Ellen McLean. “However, this initiative is as much about educating riders on how to use our system and providing additional security as is it about the small percentage of people who try to ride for free.”
Officers will issue verbal warnings to first-time offenders who do not have a valid fare instrument. Repeat offenses could result in a citation and fine of up to $300.
