Police officers from Zone 3 were in the area of Charles Street and Beltzhoover Avenue on the morning of Wednesday, April 19, when they heard multiple shots fired in the area.

Officers immediately traveled in the direction of the shots fired and encountered a Ford Fusion traveling at a high rate of speed on Matthews Avenue toward Bausman Street. The vehicle had a shattered rear driver-side window.

Before police could conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle voluntarily pulled over to the side of the road.

As police approached the vehicle they observed the rear driver-side window shattered and a nine-month-old male infant in the backseat. They also saw a black firearm on the driver side floor.

The driver – identified as Gary Gates, 21, of East Hills, was detained from the vehicle. A mason jar filled with two bags of marijuana was also found on the passenger floor. A digital scale was also recovered from the center console of the vehicle.

Officers learned Gates was in the area to meet other men. When he got to Moore Avenue, gunfire was exchanged between two men and Gates.

An inventory search of the vehicle recovered an additional firearm, more than $2,200 cash, a Lucky Charms cereal box with seven bags of marijuana inside, three firearm magazines, a smartphone and a live round.

Gates was taken into custody and transported to the Allegheny County Jail. His charges include driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, possession of controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver controlled substance, possessing instruments of crime, discharging firearm, endangering welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.

The infant was taken to UPMC Children's Hospital for a cut to his face from the shattered glass window. The infant was later released to family.
