Let there be light, again flag pole light restored

The Welcome to the Hilltop sign and flag pole at Mountain and Wagner streets in Mt. Oliver City are lighted again.

In February of 2016, the utility pole where lights are mounted illuminating the sign and flag pole was damaged by a hit and run driver. Since that time the corner had remained unlighted.

To protect the area, the City of Pittsburgh is now planning to install a guide rail. The local block group is looking into purchasing and installing cameras to record the intersection.

The Welcome sign is one of the projects of the Mt. Oliver City/St. Clair Block Group.

Another project in the neighborhood, The Game Stop at Mountain and Fisher streets, has been repeated vandalized. The Little Library at the site was recently vandalized and the books destroyed, for the third time. A local resident repaired the Little Library and it was restocked with books.

However, it was reported that shortly after two pre-teen boys were striking the post the library sits on in an effort to damage it. The boys were chased away by a passing motorist.

In addition, boulders placed around the parklet have been vandalized with graffiti.

The block group already has cameras recording portions of the area and are working to install additional cameras. In the meantime, anyone who witnesses vandalism in the area is asked to call 911.
