STEAM Club encourages students in math, science

Students at Pittsburgh Roosevelt K-5 are excited to work on new challenges each week at the new STEAM Club.

Pittsburgh Roosevelt K-5 in Carrick has a new after school club, the STEAM Club.

STEAM stands for S- Science, T- Technology, E-Engineering, A-Arts, and M-Math. The club meets weekly to complete challenges involving one or more of the Science categories.

Teacher Corie Mann-Allen created the club to encourage students to develop an interest in the many different fields of Science. She hopes it may lead students to eventually pursue a career in science or math.

Ms. Mann-Allen also believes it teaches them important life skills; working cooperatively to problem solve, troubleshooting, and learning from failure and persistence to solve a problem. Weekly challenges have included creating magnetic goo, building a stable load bearing bridge and writing a computer program for a video game. Students are excited to discover a new challenge each week.

Says one student, " I never want STEAM Club to end!"
