Stolen firearm located during arrest in Bon Air

Zone 3 police officers on patrol in Bon Air at 9:44 p.m. on January 18 observed the driver and passenger crouch low in a vehicle parked near Bon Air Avenue and Camfield Street as the patrol car approached.

The officers made contact with the driver, Shawn Edward Elk, 21, of Bon Air. As they were speaking with Elk and the passenger, there was a strong odor of freshly burning marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle.

Officers observed a brownie sitting in plain view in the vehicle and a marijuana blunt on the driver's side floor. As the officers searched the vehicle, Elk attempted to run but was taken into custody. A loaded stolen firearm was also found in the vehicle.

Elk was taken to the Allegheny County Jail. His charges include marijuana – possession small amount for personal use, firearms not to be carried without a license, and receiving stolen property.
