ASC programs for younger 'seniors' in A-Town

Allentown Senior Center (ASC) will host an Open House to introduce a new program, “A-Town Evening Seniors,” on Tuesday evening, January 31 from 6-8.

A free light dinner will be provided as well as a presentation to introduce some of the fun, free and low-cost activities available to older adults during early evening hours. This program is open to anyone aged 55 and older.

Door to door transportation, $1.15 each way, is available to anyone aged 60 and older by completing a free registration form at the center at least one week in advance of their trip.

Several months ago, a few ‘younger’ older adults suggested expanding to evening programming for people like them who were still working, caring for grandchildren, or otherwise busy during the day. A planning committee formed to strategize what evening programming would look like and have been meeting since October.

The A-Town Evening Seniors Open House is a result of the research to identify numerous activities available both at Allentown Senior Center and throughout the area. The committee has also referred to the new programming as, “Home and in Bed by 9 p.m.

Evening programming will also support ASC’s day programming by increasing the numbers of older adults participating. Allentown Senior Center is like many other community senior centers who are struggling to maintain the numbers of participants needed to remain open. This planning committee sees an opportunity to increase the numbers of older adults ‘in the door’ in an effort to secure a long future for ASC.
