Wabash Tunnel will continue to have waiver until further notice

Commuters may continue to use the Wabash Tunnel during rush hour until further notice.

The Federal Transit Administration granted Port Authority a waiver in 2013 to temporarily lift the tunnel’s high-occupancy vehicle restrictions. The FTA most recently extended the waiver through Dec. 31.

The Wabash Tunnel opened as a commuter tunnel in December 2004. It provides a shortcut for motorists from Route 51 to the South Side and Downtown Pittsburgh.

The tunnel will operate inbound from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and outbound from 3-11 p.m. Monday Through Friday. Weekdays, the tunnel will be closed from 2-3 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the tunnels will be open outbound only from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
