The 2016-2017 school year may be a wonderful one with the addition of new faces and spaces at Pittsburgh Phillips K-5.

The school welcomed several new staff members to the Phillips family and summer renovations creating more classroom space.

Phillips K-5’s mission is to create a safe school, where students soar to their highest potential as they grow to be life-long learners, creative thinkers, and contributing members of their communities. Every member of the school staff contributes to this mission, and the three new members are no exception.

It was less of a “welcome” and more of a “welcome back!” for Kristen Castillo, who worked previously at Phillips as a learning support teacher, from 2002 to 2012. In fall of 2012 she took on a new role in the school district, as Ready to Learn Curriculum and Assessment Specialist, and served in this role for the last four years. This year, she has returned to the school as the new kindergarten teacher.

Phillips also welcomed veteran learning support teacher and native South Side resident, Jen Salzmann to its staff this year. Ms. Salzmann has 17 years of experience working as a learning support teacher in the Pittsburgh Public School District, and will spend her 18th year at Pittsburgh Phillips.

In keeping with a theme of well-experienced and knowledgeable women, Brenda Vogel is the new Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) at Phillips. She has spent the past 17 years working as an SLP in various schools throughout Pittsburgh Public School District, and the past seven years living in South Side.

In addition to adding new staff members, Phillips was also fortunate to have interior renovations completed over the summer. In an effort to maximize the utility of the school’s minimal space, district architects created a science classroom and learning support room out of previously underutilized spaces.
