Market House Center fall activities


South Side Market House Senior Center will have a variety of activities for seniors at the center this fall.

The Community College of Allegheny County Fall Semester at the center started September 6 with a Chair Exercise Class. This is a free ten-week class that helps those with physical restriction, exercise in a safe and challenging manner.

The class is from 10-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday, but will not be exercising the entire time. Seniors may also pre-order a lunch for 50¢.

A Lecture and Learn Series for the months of September and October every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. is underway. Call to register for lunch by noon the day before. Upcoming topics include: September 14, Ancient Architecture of Ephesus, Turkey; September 21, The Life of Pittsburgh Native Dance Martha Graham; and, September 28, Chichen, The Sacred Ancient Mayan Ruins of Itza, Mexico.

Art classes continue at the center on Wednesday. September projects include: September 14, Glass Bead Vase, $5; September 21, final touches on Perogie Pin; and, September 28, Glass Photo Jewelry, $5 per item. Call the center for details.

A special Spaghetti Fundraiser and Family Bingo will take place on September 19. The dinner is from 5-6 p.m. for $7 per person and bingo is at 6:30 p.m. The fundraiser benefits a new Computer Lab at the center.

Every Monday the center is offering a class, “Releasing Pain and Tension with Simple Movement” from 1:15-2 p.m. The class utilizes a combination of The Trager Method and Reki.

In October the center will be starting a Pickleball day Tuesdays and Thursday from 9 a.m.-noon at the Ormsby Recreation Center behind the South Side Library. Look for more details in the near future.

The Market House Senior Center’s annual Oktoberfest will be October 14 from 11 a.m. until they run out of homemade perogies, haulski, hot sausage and baked goods. Gently used items that could be donated to the Rummage Sale are needed. Drop off rummage sale items at the center any time but lunch time.

AARP will hold a Driver Safety Program September 20-21 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Completion of the course could qualify for a five percent discount on car insurance. Call the center for more details.
