The Phillips' students, along with the other in fifth graders, spent 10 weeks learning ballroom dances including the Merengue, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango and Swing.  The program, sponsored by Pittsburgh Mercy, uses dance to teach self-confidence and respect for others.

At the end of the 10 weeks, the teachers chose six boys and six girls who displayed good team work to compete against fifth graders from nine other public, charter and Catholic schools.

In addition, Phillips' teacher Steve Wilk along with four teachers received the Judy Sigal Spirit Award.  Ms. Sigal had been teacher at Phillips until last year when she passed away from cancer. In addition to teaching fourth grade math, she went above and beyond for the students and attended all the Colors of the Rainbow Competitions when Phillips students danced.

The five teachers were acknowledged for all the time and effort they have devoted to working with the students during the ballroom dancing lessons and preparing them for the competition.
