Carrick High alumni to honor 20 at the 21st annual luncheon


The Carrick High Alumni Sports Hall of Fame will honor 20 coaches and athletes at its 21st Annual Inductions on Sunday, May 22.

They will join 38 coaches who brought championships to Carrick High in seven major sports and 116 individuals who starred in sports representing Carrick High since 1924.

Two of the honorees will be installed in the Hall of Fame posthumously. The late Harry R. Russell, a decorated U.S. Marine Pacific Combat Veteran of WWII, who left Carrick High before graduation to join the Marines in 1943. After the war he was named a San Jose (CA) College Football MVP and All Star during his for four college years. The late Richard James Dunner, Class of 1992, Carrick High’s best baseball pitcher in 1991, was named an All Star, and voted Most Athletic of his 1992 class.

Patrick Schlemmer, Carrick High Boys and Girls Athletic Director and a CHS Teacher 19 years, will be awarded the Hall of Fame medallion.

Robert Tennant, head coach of Carrick High’s 2015 City Volleyball Champions will be honored along with Carrick High seniors Grant Walsh, Student Athlete of 2015 and Volleyball Team Captain two years and Anthony Pham, City League Volleyball MVP; and three time All City star, who will represent the championship team.

Lenny Orbovich, the 2016 City Wrestling Coach of the Year and coach of Carrick High’s 2016 City Championship Team. Representing the team will be the three team captains Cody Kirk, Cory Dees and Matt O’Connor who are members of Carrick High’s 2016 graduating class.

Other Carrick High athletes who will be honored at the luncheon are Richard S. Carmen, Class of 1958, All City Football and MVP in 1957, track star; William James Held, Class of 1962, city diving champion and Robert Starliper awardee; Harry M. McCafferty Jr., Class of 1968 vice president; CHS football standout for four years, volleyball and track; Peter Svaronowic, Class of 1977, football co-captain; starter on offense and defense.

Robert A. Gallagher and Chester A. Robinson, both of the Class of 1984. Mr. Gallagher was All City and football co-captain and led best City League defense of 1983. Mr. Robinson was named to the All City in 1983; football, team MVP; set school shot put record and served as Carrick High’s Student Council president. Nathan Wilder, Class of 1992, a CHS Honor Graduate; All City football and team Captain in 1991. Mark Donnelly, PhD, Class of 1994; three years wrestling and football; elected Male Athlete of 1994.

Andrew A. Macurak, Class of 1995, football and track co-captain; 1993 Weightlifter of the Year. Brian M. Grilli, Class of 2005, three wrestling Gold Medals; team captain for three years. Anthony Manuel, Class of 2015, forward for Carrick Cougars Hockey Team; All Time leading hockey scorer; honored by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
