PA Resources Council will conduct composting, rain barrel workshops


 The Pennsylvania Resources Council has announced its Spring 2016 schedule of workshops to take place in May and June at several locations in Allegheny County.

Backyard Composting Workshops will take place on:

Saturday, May 14, from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Baldwin Borough Public Library;

Saturday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Ross Township Community Center;

Thursday, June 23, from 7 – 8:30 p.m., Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park; and,

Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Harrison Hills Environmental Education Center.

Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.

Cost is $70 per person or $75 per couple and includes one composting bin. Pre-registration is required.

Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden Earth compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity for both urban and suburban settings.

Watershed Awareness/Rain Barrel Workshops will be held on: Thursday, May 19, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., at the Carnegie Borough Building and Wednesday, May 25, from 7 – 8:30 p.m., at the National Aviary, North Side.

Discover how to harvest rainwater from a roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape. Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff, ways to conserve water in the home, and techniques to reduce individual contributions to watershed pollution.

 Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden Rain 55-gallon easy-to-install rain barrel. Cost is $80 per person or $85 per couple and includes one rain barrel. Pre-registration is required.
