Albert J. Suess, Jr. named Fraternal Societies' Fraternalist of the Year
The Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh (FSGP) has named Albert J. Suess Jr., director of sales and marketing for the Slovak Catholic Sokol, as the Fraternalist of the Year.
The FSGP is comprised of 17 Fraternal Benefit Societies and nine business‐associated groups which represent over one million members. FSGP has been serving the fraternal benefit society industry for nearly 70 years.
Each year, the FSGP selects a member who displays active leadership in promoting a fraternal spirit and has made valuable contributions to the fraternal community. Mr. Suess will be honored by the FSGP at a banquet on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the South Hills Country Club in Whitehall.
Mr. Suess was born and raised in South Side. While working at Westinghouse Credit Corporation (WCC) he attended both the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University studying both computer science and elementary education.
During his nine years at WCC, he held numerous positions. As Operations Analyst, he spearheaded numerous projects. For the next three years he held similar positions at American Water Works and Triangle Systems at their data centers.
From 1979 through 1995 Mr. Suess managed and oversaw several departments at the Data Center for Dick Corporation, at the time, Pennsylvania's largest construction company.
From 1995 to 2002, he, along with three other partners, owned and played an integral part in growing Intex Corporation, one of Pittsburgh's fastest growing IBM Business Partners.
In 2002 Mr. Suess joined the fraternal world on a full‐time basis as the sales and marketing director of the National Slovak Society (NSS Life). In 2010 he joined the Slovak Catholic Sokol as their sales and marketing director where he remains today.
For the past ten years he has also served on the Board of Directors of the United American Savings Bank, both as a Director and its Secretary.
Mr. Suess earned his Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FIC) designation in 2003 and joined the Board of the Pennsylvania Chapter of Fraternal Insurance Counselors as the vice-president and for the past two years he has held the office of president. This is his fifth year serving as an officer of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Alliance (PFA), as a director, second vice-president and currently as first vice-president. He also served as an officer for four years through the various ranks of the FSGP.
Mr. Suess is a member of a number of fraternal societies; First Catholic Slovak Union (FCSU), GBU Financial Life (United Lutheran Society, Sokol USA), Greek Catholic Union (GCU), National Slovak Society (NSS) and the Slovak Catholic Sokol (SOKOLS). As a lifelong member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Assembly 16 South Side, he has held numerous positions, initially director of sports and then president, the position he still holds today.
He also currently holds the positions of president and financial secretary of the Sokol Club. He served the Slovak Catholic Sokol Group 14 sports director, president and honorary president. On the national level of the SOKOLS he has held a number of positions including assistant physical director, assistant sports director, director of sports and athletics and second vice-president.
Throughout the years he has given his time and efforts to numerous fundraising events for individuals with life threatening illnesses and to church youth programs and has also coached elementary school basketball. He was highly involved in the FSGP's Kidz Bowling 4 Kidz fundraiser that supported the charities of Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital.
Mr. Suess and his wife, Paula, have been married for 19 years and currently reside in Baldwin Borough. They have a total of five children; Carmella (Brandon), Damian (Hien), Raymond (Carrie), Brian and Amy (Shane), and five grandchildren; Isabel, Simon, Ty, Gia and Zachary Cooper.
