Holy Week Services throughout South Pittsburgh


Prince of Peace Parish

Prince of Peace Catholic Parish on South Side Holy Week liturgies and services will begin with Palm Sunday.

Mass times will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday at St. Adalbert Church and 11 a.m. on Sunday at St. Peter Church. On Wednesday, there will be a Holy Hour at 12:30 p.m. held at St. Adalbert Church and an evening Holy Hour at 5:30 p.m. at St. Peter Church, followed by a Tenebrae service at 6:30 p.m. Tenebrae is a spiritual journey through the final hours of the life and death of Christ, told in word and song.

Holy Thursday Mass, the commemoration of the Last Supper and institution of the Holy Eucharist, will be held at 6 p.m. at St. Adalbert Church with private visitation until 10 p.m.

Good Friday services will commence with the recitation of the Stations of the Cross at noon, followed by the reading of the Passion, adoration of the Holy Cross and Communion at St. Adalbert Church beginning at 1 p.m. Stations of the Cross will also be held Friday evening at St. Peter Church beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The traditional Blessing of Easter Foods (baskets) will be held on Saturday at St. Adalbert Church at noon. The Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday) Mass will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Adalbert Church.

Easter Mass will be at 9 a.m. at St. Adalbert Church and 11 a.m. at St. Peter Church.

St. Adalbert Church is at 160 S. 15th Street and St. Peter Church is at 28th and Sarah streets.

St. Paul of the Cross Monastery

Holy Week and Easter services will be held at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery, 148 Monastery Avenue on the South Side Slopes.

Palm Sunday services include: Saturday, March 19, Vigil for Passion Sunday, 5:30 p.m .; and, Sunday, March 20: Palm Sunday Mass, 8 a.m .; Palm Sunday Mass with Solemn Procession, 10 a.m.

Sacrament of Reconciliation will take place on: Saturday, March 19, 3-4 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m .; Monday, March 21, 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m .; and, Wednesday, March 23 from 6-7 p.m.

The Paschal Triduum services include:

Holy Thursday, March 24, Solemn Tenebrae, 9 a.m .; 7 p.m. Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Adoration until 10 p.m.

Good Friday, March 25, 9 a.m. Solemn Tenebrae; noon Prayerful Meditations on the Passion of Jesus; and, 2:00 p.m. Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion with Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion.

Holy Saturday, March 26, Solemn Tenebrae at 9 a.m. and the Easter Vigil at 8 p.m.

Easter Sunday includes Mass of Easter at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Santa Maria Magdalena

Palm Sunday services at Sancta Maria Magdalena, 1912 Brownsville Road in the Oasis Center, Carrick, include Blessing of Palms, Procession Divine Liturgy,1 p.m.

Sunday Evening 6 p.m. will be the Festa San Giuseppe, an Italian style dinner with devotion, friends and music. RSVP to 412 586-5621. Limited seating is available.

South Side Presbyterian Church

The South Side Presbyterian Church welcomes all to services on Palm and Passion Sunday, March 20, at 11 a.m.

All are welcome to receive Communion, and the church also plans to receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, which goes for disaster assistance, hunger needs, and self-development of people currently in poverty both in this country and worldwide.

The South Side Presbyterian Church is at S. 20th and Sarah streets in South Side and is fully handicap accessible. Youth Sunday School is provided during the service.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity Lutheran Church, 601 Brownsville Road, will hold Holy Week services beginning on Holy Thursday, March 24 at 4:40.

Good Friday services will be on March 25 at 4:30 p.m.

Easter will begin with a breakfast buffet from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. followed by Worship services at 11:15 a.m.
