Camp Cadet program sets April 15 deadline for applications

The Allegheny County Camp Cadet program is accepting applications through April 15 for its July 31 - August 6 program. Any boy or girl who resides in Allegheny County who is between the ages of 12 and 14 and in good physical condition can apply.

Now in its 12th year, Allegheny County Camp Cadet is a non-profit, charitable organization that is funded by contributions from the community and is free to attendees. A mini-police academy program, Camp Cadet is designed to provide a better understanding of law enforcement activities while living in an atmosphere similar to a police training academy.

Emphasis is placed on improving self-discipline, building self-esteem and confidence through teamwork, and making new friends. The one-week program will be held at Camp Guyasuta in O’Hara Township, Allegheny County.

Allegheny County Camp Cadet is staffed by local Pennsylvania State Police, Allegheny County Police, Allegheny County Sheriffs and local municipal police officers who serve as counselors and instructors. Each day consists of physical training, followed by a morning run. Then the candidates will return to their quarters for personal hygiene and to prepare for inspection.

During the day, various activities are scheduled including presentations by various law enforcement agencies, a mock crime scene investigation, a mock criminal trial and sporting activities. In its 12-year history, nearly 1,500 children have applied for the program, and more than 500 have attended and graduated.

Parents or legal guardians of children who have an interest in Camp Cadet may visit the organization’s website at http://www.alleghenycountycampcadet.org to obtain a copy of the application, or to apply online. They can also contact Officer Mike Spagnoletti, co-director of Camp Cadet, at 412-473-1322 or via e-mail at michael.spagnoletti@alleghenycounty.us for an application or more information.
