Preservation society to provide updates

The St. George Church Preservation Society (SGCPS) will hold a Town Hall meeting on Saturday, March 5, 3 p.m. at the Hilltop United Methodist Church, 631 Warrington Avenue to discuss the closing of St. John Vianney Church.

The meeting will include a presentation of the events and the efforts that have been made to keep the church open and the plans to reopen and restore the church. In addition, SGCPS members will update the community of their initial steps in the process to appeal the closing of the church which began on February 2. A question and answer session will follow.

According to SGCPS members, the appeal process involves several steps starting at the Pittsburgh Diocese, then to the Vatican with the Congregation for the Clergy and then to the Apostolic Signatura.

The SGCPS was formed in August 2015 after the Pittsburgh Diocese announced a plan to close and demolish the church. They continue to fund-raise to support the appeal process and have launched a pledge campaign intended to support the operation and restoration of the church.

The a GoFundMe.com church restoration fund was launched at http://www.gofundme.com/savestgeorgechurch.
