Portion of Smithfield St. closed

The northbound travel lane and parking lane of Smithfield Street -- spanning from Fourth Ave. to Fifth Ave. – was scheduled to be closed to accommodate the reconstruction of the Forbes Ave. and Smithfield St. intersection beginning Monday morning, February 15.

This closure is expected to be in effect for approximately six months.

The reconstruction project includes improvements to curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, upgrading of signalized intersections, new storm system and new concrete pavement, as well as streetscaping features and street lighting. Underground work includes vault repairs, waterline replacement, relining of existing combined sewer line and other miscellaneous construction. This work will involve future changes in traffic flow as the project advances.

The Forbes Avenue project is a federally funded project started in 2014 with 80 percent of the $5.3 million budget coming from the Federal Highway Administration through PennDOT. The work is being performed by A. Merante Contracting, Inc., a heavy civil and highway contractor.

Pedestrians will have access to all buildings and businesses as well as access through the intersection of Smithfield St. and Forbes Ave.

The southbound bus-only lane of Smithfield St. will remain open to accommodate the Port Authority bus schedules. Loading for businesses will also be maintained.
