Man shot on East Carson early on Christmas Eve

On December 24 at approximately 1:59 a.m., Zone 3 Officers and a K-9 Officer were sent to the 1300 block of E. Carson Street for a report that a man had been shot.

Officers found the victim inside of a restaurant in the 1500 block. The 23-year-old victim from Aliquippa was suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg.

Shortly after, at S. 14th and E. Carson, a Mount Oliver Officer reported he had stopped a man, identified as North Versailles resident Joseph Austin Katchur, 21, who matched the description of the shooter. He had the gun used in the shooting in his possession.

According to police, it is believed Mr. Katchur got into a verbal argument with a woman while at Bar 12 that continued outside. Near the intersection of S. 14th and E. Carson, three men approached the arguing pair and words were exchanged.

One of the three men punched Mr. Katchur in the face and people began to run with Mr. Katchur chased one. In the 1400 block of E. Carson, he fired his gun, striking the victim in the leg.

The victim may not have been the one who punched the suspect.

Mr. Katchur is charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, discharging firearm or airgun, and possessing instruments of crime.

Paramedics transported the victim to UPMC Mercy in stable condition.
