Zone 3 police investigating Friday night robberies

Pittsburgh police are investigating four robberies, three that may be related, occurring in Zone 3 overnight on Friday, Dec. 18.

Police have added additional investigative resources, including extra patrols and plainclothes detectives, have been deployed in the southern neighborhoods to help identify and apprehend the suspect or suspects.

At approximately 9:14 p.m. Zone 3 Officers responded to the 2100 block of Sarah Street in South Side Flats for a report of a robbery. According to police, two 20-year-old women were walking into their home when they were approached by an unknown man. The suspect displayed a firearm, pointed it at the women and demanded their belongings.

The women handed over their cell phones and wallets. The suspect also took a purse from one of the women.

The suspect, described as a black male, approximately 25-30 years old and wearing a black Carhartt jacket, fled toward 18th Street from 21st at Sarah.

At approximately 11:35 p.m. police responded to Bailey Avenue and Ruth Street in Mt. Washington for another robbery report. The 51 year old female victim was walking down Ruth Street when she heard someone run up behind her.

The suspect put a gun to her temple, patted her down and demanded money. The victim told the suspect she didn’t have any money or personal belongings.

The suspect then instructed her to walk away from him with her hands up, threatening to shoot her if she turned around. The victim complied and went to a nearby gas station to call 9-1-1.

A few minutes later at approximately 11:40 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of Haberman Avenue in Mt. Washington for another robbery report. A 46-year-old woman was walking along Haberman when she was approached by an unknown black man.

The suspect displayed a firearm and demanded her phone and money. The suspect only took the woman’s cell phone after she told him she only had a dollar in her wallet.

The suspect fled on foot on Haberman toward Bailey.

A third report of a robbery within 15 minutes happened at approximately 11:47 p.m. Police responded to the 200 block of Orchard Place in Knoxville for a report of a robbery.

A 58-year-old woman was walking on Grimes Avenue when an unknown black man approached her, pulled out a firearm, put it to her head, and ordered her to walk down the street toward Charles Street. As this was happening, the suspect took the woman’s purse from her shoulder containing various personal belongings.

When the victim refused to walk any further with the suspect, he began threatening her with the firearm. The victim screamed and the suspect fled up Grimes Avenue toward Cedarhurst Street.

The suspect in three of the overnight incidents has the same appearance: a black male, approximately 25-35 years old, 6’, approximately 230-250 pounds and a large build. He wears his hair in straight braids that are shoulder length and has scruffy facial hair. He was wearing a black knit cap, a black hooded sweatshirt with a dark brown jacket over top and possibly black pants and shoes.

None of the victims in the four robberies were physically injured. Anyone with information regarding these robberies is asked to call 9-1-1.
