County Jail modernizes scheduling, registration

The Allegheny County Jail has implemented a new scheduling and registration system that will allow for visitors to register for and schedule visits with inmates online at

Information on the transition has been provided to inmates and current visitors for the past 60 days.

“It is important for our inmates to have contact with family members and friends while they are here – and we understand how critical that interaction can be to recidivism rates, quality of life, public safety, prison security, transparency and accountability,” said Warden Orlando Harper.

Visitors must submit an application to the facility to become an approved visitor by either calling or appearing in person with a valid ID. After submission, jail officials complete the screening process by conducting a background check on potential visitors.

Once approved, the person is permitted to visit during scheduled visiting hours. The old system required that visitors come in-person to the jail to sign up to visit and be registered by a corrections officer.

All requests must be made no later than 15 minutes before the visit, but it is recommended that visitors arrive at least 45 minutes prior to a visit. Visits are limited to a set number of spaces in a particular visiting period, based on the pod, and is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. When spaces are filled, visitors may wait for the next available visiting time.

The new system requires the initial registration of a visitor using a valid e-mail address. Once registered, visits must be scheduled at least one day in advance, but no more than seven days in advance. Visitors may select a preferred date, time and location and confirm that registration through the site.

Visits are confirmed in the system immediately, and those registering will get a notification with the details by e-mail. Visits may also be canceled through the online system. Individuals visiting an inmate are still required to arrive 15 minutes or more before the visit is scheduled and must bring a valid photo identification.

In addition to the web-based system, Android users also have the option to download an app for their phones to utilize the new system. Those without access to the Internet or an Android smartphone may also call to schedule a visit by calling the facility information line at 412-350-2413.
