Free parking in city on weekends in Nov. Dec.
At Monday’s Pittsburgh City Council meeting, council members Dan Gilman and Corey O’Connor introduced a resolution authorizing the Pittsburgh Parking Authority to offer free parking for on-street metered parking spaces and surface-level lots on Saturdays, November 28, December 5, 12, 19, and 26.
November 28 is celebrated nationwide as Small Business Saturday; a campaign that raises awareness about the important role that small retailers play in our local economy. Small retailers make between 10 and 20% of their entire annual profits during the holiday shopping season.
Offering free parking during that time can increase sales at Pittsburgh’s small neighborhood retailers and help support small businesses during some of their busiest shopping days of the year.
According to Councilman Gilman, “small businesses in Pittsburgh are vital to the success, longevity, and vibrancy of our neighborhoods thanks to their locally tailored services, positive economic impact, and the employment opportunities they provide to residents.”
Councilman O’Connor added, “Offering this parking throughout the holiday season allows the city to attract more customers from across the Pittsburgh region who can visit many small, locally-owned businesses that are vital parts of our neighborhoods.”
