Chemfest mixes up some family fun at Science Center

To celebrate National Chemistry Week, Carnegie Science Center is hosting its annual ChemFest Celebration on Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24. This year’s theme is “Chemistry Colors Our World!”

With dozens of hands-on activities for the whole family, ChemFest demonstrates chemistry is not limited to beakers and laboratories; it is all around us.

Demonstrations will explore the chemistry of food colors, fireworks, rainbows, natural dyes, and pigments. Visitors can experiment with fluorescence, phosphorescence, and chemiluminescence.

Representatives from local companies, colleges, and universities will be on-site to present activities and talk about their work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

ChemFest activities run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. ChemFest activities are included with general admission.

National Chemistry Week is an event of the American Chemical Society. ChemFest is hosted in partnership with the American Chemical Society, presented by Ashland, and is sponsored by WISH 99.7 FM and Mr. Waterheater.

Additional support is provided by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, the PPG Industries Foundation, and the PPG Science Education Council.
