Pitt students make Pop des Fleurs in S.S.

Pitt students pitched in with the South Side Chamber of Commerce to make Pop des Fleurs during the Day of Caring. Together they made nearly 500 of the colorful flowers which will be used to decorate the South Side Branch Library and the Welcome Center this coming winter.

Sixteen Pitt community members joined the South Side Chamber of Commerce (SSCC) to work on a Day of Caring community service project.

This year, SSCC Board member and feng shui expert Yvonne Phillips led a creative workshop for the Pitt volunteers. They learned how to handcraft and make flowers for the 2016 Pop des Fleurs winter pop-up gardens planned for South Side. Pitt Office of Community Relations Director Kannu Sahni stopped by to cheer on the Pitt team. Candice Gonzalez and Barbara Hughes of the SSCC staffed the event.

Together, they made nearly 500 beautiful and colorful flowers which will be used to decorate the South Side branch of the Carnegie Library, the Welcome Center and other locations.

Pop des Fleurs is a community engagement project of the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. For more information, visit for materials guidelines, tutorials, workshops and events. The guild suggests that "sowing" flowers through November 2015. Fiberarts gardens will bloom all around Pittsburgh from February 6 through March 19, 2016.

Pitt's 2015 Annual Day of Caring marks the 24th year for Pitt and featured more service projects than ever, both in local neighborhoods close to campus and at agencies of regional importance. Pitt alumni, students, faculty and staff served on projects identified by community partners.

Chancellor Patrick Gallagher and many other Pitt leaders have set an excellent example by enthusiastically supporting this effort in past years, personally assisting with projects and encouraging the entire Pitt community to participate.
