The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is now offering seasonal flu and high dose flu immunizations.

The vaccines are available at the walk-in immunization clinic at 3441 Forbes Avenue in Oakland – on the third floor. The immunization clinic will be open weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., except for Wednesdays, when the clinic hours are 1-8 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Influenza is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection that can cause mild to severe illness and is potentially fatal. Getting an annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. This year, the Health Department will offer the high dose influenza vaccine for the first time. The high dose flu vaccine is four times more concentrated than the regular flu shot, and is available only for seniors 65 years of age and older.

“Flu vaccine is an important way to combat the flu and to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy,” said ACHD Director, Dr. Karen Hacker.

As an alternative to the regular and high dose flu shots, the Health Department will offer FluMist® nasal spray which contains live, but weakened, flu strains to immunize against the flu. FluMist® is approved for healthy people ages 2 to 49 years of age, except for pregnant women and children with asthma.

The price of the regular seasonal flu shot and FluMist® is $25 for anyone with insurance. The high dose is priced at $35.

A limited supply of flu vaccine will be available, at no cost, to uninsured children ages 6 months old to 8 years old. Call 412-578-8062, in advance to make sure the vaccine is available.

The influenza vaccine is a covered benefit for people with Medicare Part B who are not in an HMO plan. Seniors with Medicare Part B that are enrolled in an HMO plan will be asked to pay for the shots at the Health Department immunization clinic, at the costs stated above. Seniors must provide their Medicare card and proper ID at the time of service.
