Phone app will allow parkers to add time

The Pittsburgh Parking Authority (PPA) has selected Parkmobile to supply the technology required to accommodate adding a pay-by-phone payment option for purchases at all metered spaces throughout the city.

The Atlanta based firm will begin adapting its system to the Parking Authority’s specifications immediately and the new service is expected to be in use in approximately eight weeks, said David Onorato, the PPA executive director.

“Pay-by-phone is a stand-alone service feature that may be selected at any of our metered parking locations, even those single-space models that now accept only coins as payment,” Mr. Onorato explained. “Instructions posted directly on each meter, single or multi-space, will guide customers thourgh the new option’s proper use.”

The PPA will incur no cost in adding the pament feature.

“Instead, our industry views the service as a convenience that is paid for by the customer through a minimal transaction fee recorded at the time of purchase,” he said.

Parkers may register for continuing accounts through their smart phone apps or pay for individual transactions through a direct call to the number posted on the meter managing their stays.

All existing payment practices for metered parking will remain in place.

The system will automatically transmit text alerts to patrons who registered their contact data through their phone app when their paid-for parking time is nearing its conclusion. They will then be able to move their vehicle before time expires or use their phones to purchase additional time.
