County is offering free youth dek hockey clinics

The Allegheny County Parks Department will host free dek hockey clinics for boys and girls ages 4-15 at its new dek hockey rinks in North Park and Settlers Cabin Park.

The times for the free clinics are:

North Park Dek Hockey Clinics from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, August 22 and 29.

Settlers Cabin Park Dek Hockey Clinics from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, August 22 and 29.

Participants may attend as many clinics as they like. Pre-registration for the clinics is recommended at http://www.alleghenycounty.us/parks. All participants should bring their own helmet with cage, shin guards, elbow pads and stick. Goaltending equipment will be provided for those interested in trying their hand at hockey’s challenging position.

For details, contact Allegheny County Dek Hockey Program Director Jeff Mauro at 412-848-3750 or jeffmauro@aol.com.

The North Park and Settlers Cabin Park dek hockey rinks were constructed as part of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative, a $2.3 million effort funded by the foundation and Highmark to build 12 dek hockey rinks in the region during a three-year period. To date, 11 have been built, and the final one in South Park is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
