South Side Mibster competing at 92nd National Marbles Championship

 


The 92nd National Marbles Tournament got underway on Monday, June 22, in Wildwood, N.J. Allegheny County is represented by girls champion Sierra Ricci, age 10, of Shaler Twp., boys champion Eli Murphy, age 12, of Squirrel Hill, girls runner-up Lauren Shuty, age 11, of the South Side Flats, boys runner-up Bob Narr, age 12, of Lawrenceville, and alternates Haley Grenasko, age 12, and Madison Johnson, age 11, both of Lawrenceville.

After the first day of play, Bob Narr was in third place, and Eli Murphy was tied for sixth place in the boys division. In the girls division, Lauren Shuty was tied for third place, Haley Grenasko and Madison Johnson were tied for sixth place, and Sierra Ricci was in 12th place.

The “mibsters,” or marble shooters, will play more than 1,200 games during the four-day tournament to compete for national honors, college scholarships and numerous prizes and awards. The national semi-finals will take place on the morning of Thursday, June 25, with the finals immediately following.

Allegheny County’s marbles program has produced a number of girls and boys national champions, including 10 in the last 11 years: Emily Cavacini in 2013; Bailey Narr and Brandon Matchett in 2011; Penelope Bauer in 2010; Amber Ricci and John Leffakis in 2008; Alexandra Bauer in 2007; Keith Moss in 2006; Jamie Miller in 2005; and Carly Miller in 2004.
