First Sweet Saturdays a success for Mount Oliver

On June 13, things got a little sweeter in Mt. Oliver.

Sweet Saturdays came to fruition because of the closing of Kullman’s Bakery and the need to fill that void for the residents and visitors.

Sweet Saturdays is a community sale in which anyone with sweets-making skills can sell their goods. A venue and marketing is provided free of cost so they can concentrate on their product.

During the first event, three vendors came together in 101 Brownsville Road to showcase their baking skills. Nearly 100 folks from the community came to support the sale.

“Overall we were very happy with the turn out since it was the first event. Our vendors were very happy also,” said Jami Gregg, commercial district manager for Mt. Oliver and Knoxville.

The event is sponsored by the Mt. Oliver and Knoxville Neighborhood Partnership (MOKNP) which is powered by Economic Development South. The MOKNP utilizes a community development grant which totals a 2.1 million investment over six years that focuses on Mt. Oliver, Knoxville and part of Carrick. This grant sponsors business district revitalization, youth employment and human services.

The next Sweet Saturdays are July 18 and August 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 101 Brownsville Road. Vendors are currently being recruited to sell their delectable creations. Contact Ms. Gregg at jami@economicdevelopmentsouth.org or 412-884-1400 ext. 106 for more information.
