Detour in place for northbound Route 88

 


PennDOT District 11 was slated to begin a long-term closure of northbound Route 88 (Library Road) at the intersection with Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard), June 22 weather permitting.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday night, northbound Route 88 was close to traffic between Tariff Street and Route 51 for 147 consecutive days as crews conduct roadway reconstruction. All northbound Route 88 traffic will be detoured.

Posted detour for northbound traffic is: Take Route 88 (Library Road) southbound to Connor Road (Route 3038); Turn right onto Connor Road and follow to Washington Road (Route 19); Turn right onto Washington Road (Route 19); At the split with Cochran Road (Route 19), continue straight on Washington Road (Truck 19/Route 3069); Washington Road becomes West Liberty Avenue; Follow West Liberty Avenue to Route 51.

Hillview Street will close to traffic between Route 51 and Kingwood Street during the same time frame for roadway and culvert reconstruction. Additionally, the staircase along Hillview Street will close. Pedestrian traffic will use a temporary crossing on Route 88. All other traffic will be detoured.

The posted detour is: Take Kingwood Street to Homehurst Avenue; Follow Homehurst Avenue to 6th Street; Turn right onto 6th Street and follow to Route 88 (Library Road); Turn left onto southbound Route 88; Turn right onto Connor Road (Route 3038) and follow to Washington Road (Route 19); Turn right onto Washington Road (Route 19); At the split with Cochran Road (Route 19), continue straight on Washington Road (Truck 19/Route 3069); Washington Road becomes West Liberty Avenue; Follow West Liberty Avenue to Route 51.

Bridge replacement work and the construction of a new retaining wall along Saw Mill Run will also occur during the long-term closure. Access to businesses in the work zone area will be accommodated. Police officers will be positioned at Route 88 and Tariff Street.

Additionally, Glenbury Street at the intersection with Route 51 will reopen to traffic. Also, a dedicated right hand turn lane from southbound Route 51 to southbound Route 88 will open to traffic.

The work is part of the $18.99 million Route 51/88 project which includes the replacement of five bridges, construction of a new bridge, turning lane construction, roadway reconstruction, utility relocation, signal upgrades, lighting, sidewalk and drainage improvements, CCTV cameras and stream bank restoration. Additionally, demolition and jug handle work have occurred. Four lanes of traffic on Route 51 will be maintained during peak travel times during the project. Approximately, 42,000 vehicles use Route 51 on an average day.
