Local students complete Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program in Carrick

 

Local students who participated in the Toastmasters Carrick PA program included (not in order): Logan Masek, Matt Mars, Zachary Mars, Jordan Masek, Delany McCarthy-Plut, Luke Lipowcan, and, Sarah Warywoda. The event was also attended by Dara Ware Allen, assistant superintendent of Student Support Services – Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Julie Kuchta, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Carrick branch manager.

Seven area students completed the eight-session Youth Leadership Program conducted by Toastmasters Carrick PA On May 2.

The program is designed to help youth improve their communication and leadership skills. The students represented Arlington, Carrick High School, CAPA, St. Sylvester and home schooling.

The workshop was entirely interactive. Students learned about organizing and preparing speeches, parliamentary discussion, impromptu speaking and leadership. Once a topic was introduced, the students practiced it for the remaining sessions.

In Session 7, the students spent the second half of the workshop creating an invitation and planning for Session 8 which was presented in front of their invited guests. Families and friends were treated to speeches, impromptu speaking and a demonstration on creating a motion, discussing it and voting on a final motion.

At the end of the presentation, the students were presented with certificates and enjoyed refreshments. The students had fun and while they learned during the process. They also expressed interest in leading a youth speech club to be started in the fall.

The event was also attended by Dara Ware Allen, assistant superintendent of Student Support Services – Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Julie Kuchta, Carnegie Library of PittsburghCarrick branch manager.
