Goodwill offering English language, civics classes
Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania is seeking students for its EL Civics classes.
This course was created to help non-native English speakers improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while also learning about civics-related content. Students must either be a U.S. citizen or eligible for citizenship (i.e. have a green card or social security number), cannot be an English native speaker, and must need English language services.
Goodwill’s EL Civics program integrates civics education with English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. The course allows students to increase their knowledge in the areas of U.S. history, geography, government, the legal system and workplace culture. At the same time, students will build their English language and literacy skills by communicating with other students at a similar level and instructors who genuinely care about their progress.
Through the EL Civics program, students will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to become active and informed workers and community members. They will have the opportunity to apply this experience in their daily lives as they work to achieve U.S. citizenship, register to vote or vote for the first time, volunteer for local organizations, and become more involved in their communities.
Goodwill is offering morning, afternoon or evening classes in Lawrenceville and South Side. Students must complete an orientation program prior to the start of classes. Upcoming orientation dates in Lawrenceville include: Monday, May 4, 9:30 a.m-12 p.m. or 5-7:30 p.m .; Monday, May 18, 5-7:30 p.m .; Monday, May 21, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m .; and, Monday, June 8, 5-7:30 p.m.
