Readings of Number One Sam at local Carnegie libraries

This April, children visiting Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will be introduced to Sam, a competitive race-car-driving dog who learns that some things are more important than being number one.

The 2015 selection, Number One Sam, by Philadelphia author Greg Pizzolli, uses repetition, vivid pictures and action words to help preschoolers develop such early learning skills as vocabulary, letter knowledge and print awareness.

Number One Sam introduces young readers to Sam, the best race-car driver in history -- always finishing first in every race. When his best friend, Maggie, shows she has racing talent of her own, Sam doesn’t know how to handle coming in second place and learns some things are more important than being number one.

Mr. Pizzolli will read Number One Sam during a celebration of reading, which will include activities designed specifically for children age 3-6 and their families, on Thursday, April 23 at10 a.m. at CLP – Hazelwood, 5006 Second Avenue, 15207.

Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child initiative raises awareness of early literacy development in preschoolers. This program facilitates the relationship between adults and children by providing them with opportunities to read aloud together, share stories, and books and, activities that have been shown to be crucial to early learning. Now in its tenth year, One Book, Every Young Child provides free books to childcare centers, Head Start programs and libraries to encourage parents and adults to actively engage young children in reading.

In addition to this author visit, South Pittsburgh CLP neighborhood locations will host special storytimes throughout the month. During each event, children’s librarians will read Number One Sam and provide book-related activities, games, stories and crafts for children.

In South Pittsburgh the special storytimes will include:

Thursday, April 9 11, a.m., CLP – Mount Washington, 315 Grandview Avenue.

Wednesday, April 15, 5:30 p.m., CLP – Knoxville, 400 Brownsville Road, and,

Tuesday, April 28, 10:30 a.m., CLP – Carrick, 1811 Brownsville Road.
