Wear Red Day celebrated at senior center

February 6 was "Wear Red Day" throughout the nation and the 'over age 60' crowd at Henry Kaufmann Senior Center wore red from head to toe.

February 6 was "Wear Red Day" throughout the nation and the 'over age 60' crowd at Henry Kaufmann Senior Center wore red from head to toe.

One participant confided she also had on her "red gutchies." A "Women's Heart Health" presentation was given by Activities & Services Coordinator Cyndie Carioli in an effort to bring awareness of the differences between women's and men's symptoms of heart distress.

She reviewed five heart facts every woman should know: Heart disease is the #1 killer of women; 80 percent of women age 40-60 have one or more heart disease risk factors that can be controlled or reduced; Women are far less likely than men to be tested or treated for heart disease in a timely manner; Women have more heart attacks that go unrecognized, more repeat heart attacks, and greater risk of stroke after heart attack; and, Women don't know that their symptoms may be different from men so they may ignore shortness of breath, fatigue, abdominal pressure, nausea or heartburn, or jaw, neck, back, or upper shoulder pain.

Since a Pennsylvanian dies of heart disease every 16.5 minutes, Allentown/Henry Kaufmann Senior Center staff and participants will continue the discussion regarding heart health all month long.

Along with a free and healthy lunch each day, other February activities at Henry Kaufmann Senior Center include: Feb. 12, Casino Trip; Feb. 13, Valentine's Day Party; Feb. 18, Old Town Buffet Restaurant Trip; Feb. 20, Blood Pressure Screening; Feb. 23, Gianna Via Restaurant Trip; Feb. 24, Free Legal Services (by appt. only); Feb. 25, Healthy Cooking Class and a Birthday Celebration; and, Feb. 27, SilverScripts Medication Management Program from University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
