Mayor wants to Beautify the Burg


Mayor William Peduto was in South Side to announce the Beautify the Burg program. A new name for the volunteer driven clean up campaign in the city.

Mayor William Peduto was in South Side last week to announce the city's volunteer litter initiative has been renamed "Beautify Our 'Burgh" and will receive new signage.

Formerly called "Redd Up Zones" the effort is one of eight volunteer-fueled programs through the city's servePGH initiative, and is being renamed to bring attention to its success and to emphasize the role volunteer groups can have in keeping Pittsburgh's streets litter-free.

Mayor Peduto celebrated the renaming and new signage with city officials and leaders in litter management, including Councilman Bruce Kraus, at an event in the CCI Center in South Side. 

"This is exactly the kind of partnership we want to ensure in Pittsburgh -- one where city government empowering our neighborhoods," said Mayor Peduto. "Improving litter removal builds pride in our neighborhoods, and also lightens the load on our Public Works crews."

The Beautify Our 'Burgh program supports volunteer groups in removing litter from their streets by providing cleaning supplies and a sign recognizing the group for their efforts. This initiative is a collaboration between the city's servePGH initiative and the Department of Public Works. 

Since its inception, this initiative has engaged volunteer groups to collect nearly 30,000 lbs. of litter in 80 zones running nearly 60 miles of city streets. For more information about the program go to

Mayor Peduto was joined by Councilman Kraus, Operations Chief Guy Costa, Justin Stockdale, Regional Director Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), and Sarah Alessio Shea, chair of the city's Clean Pittsburgh Commission. After the unveiling of new signs, volunteers came together for the first litter clean up under the program's new name in PRC's adopted zone.
