Last updated 4/21/2014 at 2:39pm

Parents of children entering kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year are invited to bring their children to a Ready Freddy ‘Kindergarten Transition Event’ on Wednesday, May 7 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Arlington primary school, 2429 Charcot Street, Arlington.

Staff from the Ready Freddy program and volunteers from the Carnegie Library and Hilltop Family Support will be on hand along with Arlington school staff to welcome parents to the school to meet teachers and administrators, tour the building, and learn more about the upcoming kindergarten year. Parents who haven’t yet enrolled their children can do so at the event.

Any child who will be 5 years old before September 30 is eligible to enroll for kindergarten.

Parents are advised to bring: Their child’s birth certificate; immunization record and two proofs of address (utility bill, driver’s license, tax return, or state ID) in order to complete the enrollment process.

Refreshments will be provided and families will be able to visit a kindergarten classroom, talk with a teacher and engage in a fun activity with their child. The event is designed to help make the transition to kindergarten easier and less stressful for children and parents alike.

To RSVP for the event, parents should call the PreK-2 school at 412-488-4700.

National studies highlight the fact that nearly half of children struggle with the transition into Kindergarten. Late enrollment and poor initial attendance is seen as a significant predictor of early school failure and a long-term predictor of high school dropout.

Studies show that involving parents in the transition process is one of the most promising practices to ensure a child’s smooth transition into school.

In addition to enrollment and transition activities, Ready Freddy offers summer Kindergarten Club (K-Club) workshops for parents of emerging kindergartners that connect families to their child’s school and include fun learning activities. For information about K-Clubs, contact Medina Jackson at 412-383-7019 or
