High school students invited to enter creative writing contest

Creative teens with a passion for writing can express themselves through Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s 2014 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest.

Open to all high school students (grades 9 through 12) in Allegheny County, the contest is an opportunity for teens to showcase their writing talents, improve skills and have their work published in the 2014 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology, an anthology which will be distributed to all area libraries.

Monetary prizes will be awarded for first ($250) and second ($100) place entries in three categories: poetry, screenwriting and short prose. Authors will also be invited to a special red carpet event in August where the top winners in each category will be announced.

To enter the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest teens must submit their original work by April 21. All entries must be submitted electronically to with “Ralph Munn Entry” in the subject line. Teens are encouraged to visit their Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh location for information on resources and workshops for creative writing.

In addition, teens are encouraged to submit a design the 2014 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology book cover. The winning submission will receive $250. Images must be submitted via email to by April 21 for consideration.

Ralph Munn served as Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Director from 1928 until his retirement in 1964. His 36-year tenure is credited with significant changes to the Library, including the creation of a young adults reading room, which has evolved into the Library’s Teen Department. Prior to his death in 1975, Mr. Munn provided the library with an endowment to continue serving the young adults of Allegheny County by providing opportunities for creative writing.
