Mayor Peduto names city summer youth employment task force

Mayor William Peduto has appointed members to his Summer Youth Employment Opportunities Task Force following the issuance of an executive order calling for the program to be overhauled.

“The City of Pittsburgh Summer Youth Employment Program can be a powerful tool in the effort to open the doors of economic opportunity for our city’s youth,” said Mayor Peduto. “I ask this new committee to make sure that we are providing the best opportunities for young people to establish ladders of opportunity to build careers, not just typical summer jobs.”

The Task Force is charged with finding ways to expand access to the program, identifying new funding sources and placement sites for employed youth, and recommending new strategies for expanding career development opportunities. Chiefs Dr. Curtiss Porter and Debbie Lestitian will convene the first meeting in the near future and meet regularly throughout the remainder of the winter to develop the task force’s recommendations. A final report will be issued in the spring.

The members of the Task Force will include:

Debbie Lestitian, chief administrative officer, City of Pittsburgh (co-chair);

Dr. Curtiss Porter, Chief of Education and Neighborhood Reinvestment, City of Pittsburgh (co-chair);

Jim Denova, president, Benedum Foundation;

Andrew Butcher, CEO, GTECH;

Fred Redmond, international vice president, United Steelworkers Union;

Dr. Linda Lane, superintendent, Pittsburgh Public Schools;

Theresa Kail-Smith, member of Pittsburgh City Council;

Reverend Ricky Burgess, member of Pittsburgh City Council;

Stefani Pashman, chief executive officer, Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board;

Saleem Ghubril, executive director, Pittsburgh Promise;

Laura Fisher, senior vice president for special projects, Allegheny Conference; and,

John Lydon, executive director, Auberle.
