Volunteer tax preparers needed at Just Harvest

Just Harvest needs volunteers to help provide free tax preparation assistance for low-income families in Allegheny County.

Those who have experience doing their own tax returns (or just want to learn) are needed and should consider becoming a volunteer tax preparer at one of their 12 locations in Allegheny County. Sign up at: http://www.pghfreetaxes.org.

Over the past five years, 457 coalition volunteers prepared more than 26,960 tax returns and helped return $44.3 million in tax refunds for Pittsburghers, including $17.8 million in Earned Income Tax Credits.

For the taxpayers served, these tax refunds helped put food on the table, pay off debt, make rent or mortgage payments, and pay for heat and electricity during Pittsburgh’s winter months.

The short-term time commitment is three or more hours per week from January-April. Scheduling is easy and includes daytime, evening, or weekend hours.

For 2013, they are offering a variety of training options. In general, new volunteers complete 16 hours of training and pass an open-book IRS certification test. Ongoing support and training is provided throughout tax season.
