County swimming pools are open for the season


The 2013 season for Allegheny County pools, spray parks and the Boathouse began on Saturday, June 1 and will conclude on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

As has been the case in years past, pool passes may be purchased at four park administration offices and all four pools.

The fees for county pool passes are $60 for an individual; $110 for a family of four (two parents and two children or one parent and three children) and $15 for each additional family member; $30 for seniors 60 years of age and older; and, $20 to replace a lost or stolen pass.

Each family member must be present at the time of application in order to receive their individual photo identification pass. Proper proof of identification (driver’s license photo ID and/or PA identification card) and proof of Allegheny County residency must be provided at time of application. Full payment must be also be made at the time of application; only cash or check are accepted.

Photo identification passes provide free access to all county swimming facilities, Monday through Friday, except for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. County pools are through September 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, weather and conditions permitting. If a pool does not open by 2 p.m. due to inclement weather, it will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

Daily admission rates are $1 for children aged 0-5, $3 for youth aged 6-12 and seniors aged 60 and older, $4 for juniors aged 13-17 and $5 for adults. Group discounts (20 person minimum, 24 hour notice) and gift certificates are also available.

Spray parks at Deer Lakes Park and Round Hill Park are open from 10 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week, and are free of charge.

Boat, canoe and kayak rentals at the North Park Boathouse will be available again through an ongoing partnership with Kayak Pittsburgh, a project of Venture Outdoors. The season will send Monday, Sept. 2.

Visitors may rent solo kayaks, tandem kayaks, rowboats, canoes and pedal boats during the hours of 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Rates range from $16 to $21.50 per hour, with discounts available for Venture Outdoors members.

The county will be offering a free Learn to Swim Program for children five years of age or older. Lessons will begin on Tuesday, July 2, for participants with last names starting with letters A-K and on Thursday, July 4, for participants with last names starting with letters L-Z.

The lessons are offered once a week, for a total of four weeks, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. each time. They are offered at each of the four pools and no advance registration is available.

Volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical technicians are entitled to free season passes to county pools through the 2013 Volunteer Firefighter & EMT Park Pass Program. Created in 2009 by the county executive and county council, the program is a way to thank those who voluntarily protect and serve the residents of Allegheny County.
