John Smith Sr., dedicated to service in Mt. Oliver Boro

Mount Oliver Councilman John Smith Sr. passed away last Wednesday, May 8 after a long illness. He was 82.

Mr. Smith had a long history of service to the Mount Oliver Fire Department, joining the company in 1957 and rising to lead the organization as its president for 35 years. He also became mayor of Mount Oliver Borough in 1978 and held the office for 28 years until in 2006 when he was elected to serve as a councilman.

He remained on borough council until his death. Mr. Smith’s volunteer service in Mount Oliver included joining the joining the Mount Oliver Recreation Association in 1960.

Family will be receiving friends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at the Hilltop Baptist Church, 1540 Roseberry Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15216. A memorial service will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Oliver Fire Department, 120 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210. Arrangements were entrusted to Readshaw Funeral Home Inc., condolences may be sent through:
