State Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, has been appointed by House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody to the House Select Committee on School Safety.

The panel will investigate and review security and policy procedures in public and nonpublic schools and institutions of higher education.

“I look forward to serving on this committee and helping to contribute to this report,” Rep. Wheatley said. “While tragedies such as the Connecticut school shooting last December understandably attract the most notice, we need to ensure that students in Pittsburgh and throughout Pennsylvania are safe in their schools as well.”

Members of the committee will hold several hearings this year to examine current security safety policies; state laws and regulations related to school safety and security; early detection of potentially violent perpetrators; and any potential budgetary, revenue and governance reforms necessary to address the issues.

The committee is required to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the House of Representatives by Sept. 30.

The committee was created by the unanimous adoption of H.R. 53 in March.
