Dog park set to officially open on Aug. 2 along Mon River
July 24, 2012
The long-awaited dog park in South Side Riverfront Park is finally set to officially open with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.
Officially known as the South Pittsburgh Off-Leash Exercise Area, the dog park will feature two fenced-in areas covering about two acres. The two areas will allow separation between large and small dogs.
Opening of the off-leash area was delayed because the hot dry summer prevented the new grass from growing. Instead of delaying the park any longer, it will open for the rest of the summer and early fall before closing sometime in October for reseeding.
In the meantime, city crews will clean up the area and spread mulch where it is needed before the opening.
Later in the fall a sculpture honoring steel workers will be installed near the entrance to the off-leash area.
Work on the dog park was performed by the city's Public Works Department, mainly the Redd Up Crew, to help keep the costs down.
