Hilltop seniors will get their farmers' market checks June 26

Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (AKA "Farmers' Market Checks") at Allentown Senior Centers on Tuesday, June 26.

The Hilltop Center, 631 E. Warrington Avenue, will distribute checks from 9 - 11 a.m. and Henry Kaufmann Center, 2201 Salisbury Street from 1-3 p.m.

To qualify, seniors must be 60 years old, live in Allegheny County and meet income requirements: $20, 665 for one person; $27,991 for two people. Photo ID and proof of residency is required to receive checks. Proxy forms are available at the centers.

New this year: In order to promote healthy eating and support the local economy the definition of "Eligible Produce" has been changed. The new 2012 definition is: "Farmers' Market Nutrition Program customers may buy only the fruits and vegetables grown in Pennsylvania or purchased directly from a farmer in a neighboring state. Neighboring states include: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. Produce cannot be purchased from a wholesale business."

Example – tomatoes that were grown in California or Florida aren't eligible.

All participating farmers have been informed of this change and will adhere to the new definition.

For more information, call Allentown Senior Center at 412-481-5484.
