11th Annual Step Trek is October 8

September 27, 2011

South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association's annual Step Trek is coming soon with this year's event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8.

Registration for those who pre-purchased their tickets begins at 11 a.m. Same day registration begins at noon. Those who pre-registered can pick up their Trek Book with maps and information at the Registration Table.

The Trek itself is self-guided. The course narrative in the program book points out the landmarks and gives a history of the stairs and buildings, counts the steps (approximately 2,700) and also provides instruction as to the route.

Parking is available in the UPMC lot at 21st and Josephine streets with a short walk up into South Side Park, under the Mission Street Bridge to the Registration Table and "The Market Place" that includes an artist market, live music, a@silent auction and food trucks.

Participants may choose to use the noncompetitive event as a test of fitness or a leisurely stroll. The benefits of a stirring walk through the Slopes have earned the event a heart-healthy rating from the American Heart Association.

This event also benefits The Brashear Association's Food Pantry. Trekers are asked to bring a canned food item to help stock the Brashear Association Food Pantry. Top items needed include: Peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti Sauce, tuna, cereal and baby food.

Register the day of the event, or pre-register on line at or the StepTrek link on the SSSNA's website:

Step Trek t-shirts for this event this year are not included in the price of the event. Details on how to purchase a collector's item Step Trek t-shirt are available at
