South Sider new leadership development coordinator for PI

August 2, 2011

South Side resident, Sherri Lynn Dunik was installed as the Pilot International leadership development coordinator for the 2011-2012.

She was appointed by Beverly Wilkes of Louisville, MS, who was also installed as 2011-2012 PI president on the last day of the conference. More than 800 Pilot volunteers from five countries convened in Dallas at the Pilot International Annual Meeting and Leadership Conference held at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel in July.

Those attending the event participated in leadership training seminars, varied workshops, and fund raising events for the Pilot International Foundation. Special guest speakers were Dr. John Hart, director of Medical Science at Dallas's Center for Brain Health, consultant Susan Hite of Apex, NC, and Jason Raia of Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, PA. Entertainment included country vocalists Larry Gatlin and Melody Guy.

Now in its 90th year, Pilot International is a volunteer service organization with 9,000 member volunteers in 400 Pilot Clubs in five countries. With a service focus of brain disorders/diseases, each year Pilot Clubs receive matching grants from the Pilot International Foundation to conduct programs and projects to assist those in their community who are affected by illnesses that include Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorders, schizophrenia, depression and similar.

Ms. Dunik is currently chartering a new Pilot Club in South Side. The club will be Pilot International's first e-club.

"The e-club is a wonderful new way to give service. People today do not have time for the traditional meetings. We do everything online now, so it makes sense to "meet" online. If you can send an email you can be a Pilot," said Ms. Dunik.

The new club will conduct all business through electronic communications and still support the Pilot International Foundation through fundraising and give service to the community. Once chartered, the club will be able to offer grants and scholarships through the foundation.
