Fiesta de la Paz celebrated at Pittsburgh Phillips
April 19, 2011
More than 550 parents, students, and community members attended the Ninth Annual Fiesta de la Paz event at Pittsburgh Phillips on Friday, March 25.
This year the focus country was Mexico. Phillips teacher Colleen Pilarski wowed guests with her infomercial styled presentation on how to make salsa and a very special crema de calabaza soup.
Phillips teacher Judy Sigal and Susan Smith, Phillips math specialist, facilitated a Skype session during which Pittsburgh students and their parents talked directly with a professor from León, Mexico.
Professor Aidee Montserrat Horton Suarez had sent ahead a Power Point presentation so she could discuss the customs and culture of Mexico. Having a face-to-face conversation with a Mexican professor and hearing her children sing songs (via Skype) was a huge treat for the students.
Partners from the Center for Latin-American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh provided an in-depth overview of Mexico. Meanwhile, younger children enjoyed a story and craft activities.
Later, everyone tasted a variety of samples of typical Mexican food prepared by parents and teachers. Two members of a local mariachi band entertained throughout the evening. The Phillips PTO raised money for the students of Phillips through a raffle and a bake sale.
